Porthkerris dive trip
Early season dive trip to Porthkerris, Cornwall

From the 8th to the 11th April we have booked the cabin at Prothkerris for a long weekend's diving. For those of you who don’t know, Porthkerris is a bay on the lizard peninsula in Cornwall which has been set up perfectly for us, scuba divers, with a dive shop, filling station and toilets and showers on the beach, a couple of reefs just off one of the beaches and a kelp forest off the main beach which is also where you can catch one of the two dive boats from giving you access to some great diving in the local area and also this is the main point to leave to dive the Manacles, an Atlantic ocean reef covered in the most beautiful Jewel anemones giving it the colours that would rival any tropical reef in the world.
This area of the coast is also a favored location for visiting dolphins, Whales, and basking sharks, all of which can often be seen from the beach at Porthkerris. While underwater at this time of year you can also expect to see cuttlefish coming in to breed on the reef plus the normal fish, crabs, and lobsters in the reef and I have also found a number of Conger eels just chilling out before moving to deeper water. Baleen and cuckoo wrasse cruise around the kelp and if you are lucky you might come across a ray or two looking for a bit of lunch, the marine life here is amazing as you can see from the video below taken on our last trip to Porthkerris a couple of years ago.

The accommodation we will be staying in is the log cabin which is at moat 200 metres from the beach and is an excellent base for our diving, with 8 beds and a large kitchen and communal area for us to relax and swap stories of our dives in the evening around the real wood fire with a drink or two. The cabin even has a scuba equipment drying room at the back so like I said, this bay is the perfect setup for us, scuba divers.

The plan for the weekend is to drive down Friday evening after work so that we are fresh for two days diving on the Saturday and Sunday before heading home via Babbacombe Bay, another great dive site in Devon, on the way home. This will allow us to do as many dives as we like as the cost of the cabin includes diving fees at Prothkerris for the full length of our stay. In the evenings we can either head out for a meal with some great places nearby such as country Skittles (https://countryskittles.com/) where we can get great food and play a number of fun games. Or we can stay in the cabin and cook ourselves a nice meal while enjoying a couple of drinks. We have a lot of flexibility on this trip.

Price and booking
The cost of this trip is £40 per night based on a 3-night stay, You don’t have to stay for the full 3 nights but you do have to pay for them. On top of that is the cost of food and drink but we can bring most of that with us which will be fine unless we fancy a meal out in the evenings. Air fills are around £5 each depending on the size of your tank and then there is the hire of any equipment you might need which you can get discounts as an underwater adventures dive club member (click here for prices) so this trip will work out really cheap for a long scuba diving weekend away because fo the free diving.
The spaces are limited to 8 in the cabin but they have opened up the main house for extra rooms so if we have a lot of interest we might be able to fit you in there but this is a popular sport for divers so I wouldn’t rely on there being much more space for this weekend away so if you are interested please let me know ASAP and I will need a 50% deposit for the beginning of February.
